JOB DESCRIPTION:

Summary/Objective:

The RS Engineering Manager is responsible for managing the technical support of all business activities of Knorr Brake Company’s RailServices (aftermarket) department. This position works closely with the RS Sales Team, RS Bids & Proposals Team, RS Project Management Team and RS Business Development Team.

 

The RS Engineering Manager will be responsible for the identification of technical sales opportunities, and to develop those opportunities thorough technical concepts and proposals with a focus on Maintenance, Upgrade and Modernization for the complete Knorr-Bremse Product portfolio. 

 

General responsibilities include supervising and providing technical guidance to, and for monitoring the performance of, all engineers within the respective group, timely completion of engineering documentation, performance calculations, Clause by Clause completion, and for providing Bill of Materials, budget estimates and schedules in support of proposals, and for new and existing work. 

 

The RS Engineering Manager will be responsible for providing the necessary training and education for all RS group members (sales and engineers) to teach them about the complete product portfolio the RS Team offers its customers.   Also the RS Engineering Manager shall hold monthly project review meetings with the OE Engineering Teams support projects.    The RS Engineering Manager should maintain and working project tracker to schedule and track all work activities of the group. 
 

Essential Functions:

  • Supervising and providing technical guidance and support to Engineers, Designers, and the RS Sales Team 
  • Monitoring the performance of the group.
  • Providing budget estimates and schedules in support of new and existing work.  
  • Providing the necessary training and education for group members to allow them to keep abreast of all products and services
  • Review and approve engineering documentation generated by the group. 
  • Must be able to travel on short notice and sometimes for several weeks at a time (normally travel should be 10% or less). Senior level positions demand erratic periods of  “unscheduled” travel, such as:  1-15 days/week for 1-3 week periods.

 

Competencies:

  • Broad experience and good theoretical knowledge of engineering principles, particularly in Mechanical Engineering
  • Basic understanding of Electrical and Software Engineering principles including Control Systems Engineering
  • Knowledge and practical understanding of brakes, door systems and HVAC systems and how they functio
  • Must understand and practice good organization and configuration management skills, BOM structuring, Configuration/Change Control
  • Proficient with spreadsheets (Excel), Scheduling (Primavera, Project), Word processing programs (Word), Presentation software (PowerPoint), Use of Windchill or other PLM CAD systems. 
  • Strong problem solving and trouble shooting abilities.
  • Must have a strong desire to succeed with high expectations, both of themselves and others.
  • Must be able to write clear and precise documents.
  • Must be able to read a large volume of material (usually customer specifications) and ascertain the salient points.
  • Manage multiple and conflicting priorities.
  • Must have effective communications and presentations skills.
  • Must be energetic, hard working and willing to put in an extra effort when required. 
  • Must have good business sense.
  • Demonstrated leadership in project environment.  Must be able to clearly define requirements and expectations to others (Project Manager, Customer, Engineers, Purchasing, etc.)
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment both internally and with customers. 
  • Must be an effective negotiator (Internal departments, European partners Customers, End Users)

 

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor Degree in Engneering related discipline and 8+ years of experience
