Position Title:              Specialist, Benefit & Wellness

Position Summary:


This position will assist in directing, planning, and administering the day-to-day operations of group health and wellness programs (medical, dental, vision, disability, etc.) for the R. H. Sheppard locations and the US based Bendix Commercial Vehicle plants.  Interacting with  employees and vendors, this individual will be responsible to ensure the accuracy and correct application of all facets of plan provisions and legal guidelines with an understanding of the impact of quality on the business and employees. 


Essential Functions:


  • Adhere to established policy and procedures always ensuring confidentiality and compliance with applicable government regulations and HIPAA
  • Maintain employee benefit files and updating of employee status changes timely, i.e., group benefits, FMLA, STD, Military, paid and unpaid leave of absences
  • Train employees on benefit and wellness programs and monitor benefits administration for the Region
  • Analyze the current benefits, evaluating the usage, services, coverage, effectiveness, cost, plan experience, and competitive trends in benefit and Wellness programs
  • Promotes wellness and fitness initiatives in the organization; answers questions and collects feedback from participants.
  • Designs, plans, and implements classes, speakers, seminars, personal training, and voluntary fitness assessments to promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Assists employees with personal concerns and assessments; provides recommendations and referrals for counseling, crisis intervention, and treatment.
  • Coordinate random drug tests on a monthly basis to include CDL employee pool
  • Provide analytical and technical support in the delivery of the benefit programs and troubleshoot system problems
  • Handle employee inquiries via phone, email, and in person daily, develop communication tools to enhance understanding of the company’s benefits package
  • Compile and administer the benefit plan renewal process annually; design and distribute materials for benefits orientations, open enrollment, and summary plan descriptions
  • Serve as primary contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators, determine best plan options by working with the Third-Party administrators
  • Coordinate transfer of data to external contacts for services, premiums, and plan administration, i.e., paid, and unpaid leave, STD, and premium arrears
  • Investigate discrepancies and provide information as needed to ensure the plan runs smoothly
  • Review/approve invoices from the onsite Clinic
  • Evaluate and revise internal processes to reduce costs and increase efficiency
  • Document and maintain administrative procedures for assigned benefit processes
  • Develop long-range objectives regarding benefit and wellness programs in conjunction with the Bendix Regional Benefits Manager
  • Engage in the benefit and wellness strategy across Bendix that supports the business’ objectives.   
  • Provide customer service to employees across the U.S. for all benefit- and wellness-related matters including but not limited to new hire orientation, annual enrollment, day-to-day questions.
  • Participate in the design of programs and materials that allow for ease in benefit and wellness communications.

  • Broad knowledge and understanding of Human Resources management.
  • Requires an in-depth knowledge of benefits and wellness programs in order to provide exceptional support to his/her customers.   
  • Knowledge of all pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements both adopted and pending affecting employee benefit programs, including ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, Section 125, ADA, Workers Compensation, Medicare, OBRA and Social Security and DOL requirements
  • Knowledge in vendor management with a strong understanding of contracts that are benefit focused
  • Demonstrated capability of MS Office suite, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint.  Other tools include ADP, SAP Success Factors.   
  • Understanding of the benefit/payroll connection preferred.


Experience – Specialist 1:


  • Desired 5 years of experience in a human resources customer focused role
  • Benefit administration experience required     
  • Proven customer service experience.  
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.


Experience – Specialist 2:


  • Desired 7+ years of experience in a human resources customer focused role
  • Benefit administration leader
  • Proven customer service experience.  
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.


Experience – Specialist 3:


  • Desired 10+ years of experience in a human resources customer focused role
  • Benefit administration expert     
  • Proven customer service experience.  
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.

  • Bi-lingual in Spanish a major plus




  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or Business Administration. 
  • Certified Benefits Professional designation preferred.
