JOB DESCRIPTION:

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibility of this position is to examine metal samples to determine microstructure, matrix and chemical properties for release to production.  Incumbent will collect and maintain records relating to physical characteristics of metal and related matters; will work under minimal supervision.  Responsibilities captioned below are considered essential job functions:       

•    Adhere to established safety procedures and 5 “ S ” standards (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain the cycle) required to perform daily duties in this position, including the proper techniques used in lifting/moving of parts
•    Perform chemical analysis by using Spectrometer 
•    Follows all laboratory sample preparation procedures needed to qualify production releases
•    Test molding and core sand to determine basic properties including: moisture, green strength, permeability, and compactability by using Sand Strength Machine, Moisture Teller, Permeability Meter and Sand Ramer 
•    Maintain accurate recordkeeping for the traceability of all test results for future reference
•    Perform Methylene Blue Test in beaker to determine percent of clay found within sand sample
•    Will be required to use carbon-sulfur induction furnace, perform tests to determine amount of carbon and sulfur in sample piece safely at all times
•    Prepare test samples by sanding and polishing; using table top and stand-up belt sanders
•    Operate scales (balance and electronic) to determine weight of sample
•    Mix polishing powders, materials to make polishing molds, liquids to make etchant, and materials to make a solution critical for methylene blue test
•    Operate mill and ultrasound unit to perform velocity test of iron and determine quality status
•    Machine and examine test bars for physical properties by utilizing a lathe and tirius olsen tester 
•    Other duties as assigned; required being very flexible in their daily job  
       assignments

•    Communication skills, ability to read, write and comprehend complex instruction
•    Ability to stand, stoop, bend, walk, reach frequently throughout the workday
•    Manual dexterity
•    Ability to lift items up to 40 lbs without assistance
•    Analytical, problem solving skills
•    PC Skills
•    Knowledge of Chemistry, Physical properties of iron and higher Mathematics; laboratory procedures and techniques
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

General shop and machine tool noise, dirt, sand, grease, high temperatures and fumes from the operation of machines and equipment.  Normal working position is standing or walking through out the plant.  Some repetitive lifting/moving is required, depending on the daily assignment or tasks being performed.  Physical ability to wear respirator and safety equipment required. The weight can range anywhere from 1 to 40 lbs in which proper lifting/moving techniques are required. 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

H.S. Diploma or equivalent, Two years in a chemistry or metallurgical lab role preferred; One year in a manufacturing environment preferred

WORKING HOURS

Monday to Friday 6am-2pm (Core Hours + Overtime)
