JOB DESCRIPTION:

The primary responsibility of this position is to design, build, install and maintain machinery and machining systems.  Typically, the Automation Technician II completes tasks of a higher degree of scope and/or complexity compared to the Automation I.  The incumbent must be able to follow general machine shop practices while working under moderate supervision.  In addition to the duties of the Automation I, this position may:    Responsibilities cited below are considered essential job functions.

  • Design all circuits (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, communication) by using a computer-aided drafting equipment
  • Recommend operating software or write simple programs for devices used, i.e. relay ladder logic, stepper motor commands, analog scaling, etc.
  • Order all machine components with supervisory approval; check all parts upon arrival to ensure all are on hand and in time to complete project by required date
  • Fabricate simple parts/fixtures, as needed and/or design pieces to be made by tool room
  • Assemble, interconnect and install components, sensors, actuators, motors and all associated wiring, tubing, etc, on and around machine or system
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to utilize computerized drafting equipment to draw machine components and systems
  • Ability to convey electrical, electronic and mechanical logic as well as complex drawings, specifications and formulas
  • Ability to use a wide variety of precision and complex  instruments

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities of the Automation Technician I:

  • Communication skills, ability to read, write and comprehend instruction
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, walk, reach
  • Ability to lift items up to 50lbs without assistance
  • Manual dexterity and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of JIC, NEC, NFPA, standards and codes
  • Ability to produce sketches and perform basic board drafting
  • Knowledge of electronics, PLC’s, hydraulic and pneumatic valves, and cylinder operation and repair
  • Knowledge of light and heavy manufacturing machine repair methods and technology
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive vehicles such as pick-up truck and forklift

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:  General shop and machine tool noise, dirt, grease, chips and coolants from the operation of machine tools and the assembly of machines and equipment.  Normal working position is standing or walking through the plant.  Some repetitive lifting/moving is required, depending on the daily assignment or tasks being performed. May work from a ladder, platform, scaffold inside or outside of the plant, in confined areas or in wide temperature extremes.  The weight can range up to 100 lbs therefore proper lifting/moving techniques, i.e. use of a crane, are required in excess of 50 lbs. 

Tools Required:  Standard machine tools are required to perform most of the daily responsibilities.  Any specialized tools or measuring equipment will be provided by the company as needed.

EDUCATION & MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

H.S. Diploma or equivalent, Technical Degree, Five years automation technician experience, including moderate to complex repairs on various types of manufacturing equipment preferred
