JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for the engineering support pertaining to Transmission Controls for a customer located in Kalamzoo, MI.  The candidate will report to the Product Manager while interfacing with lead global project R&D development teams.  In addition, the candidate will interface with Bendix Advanced Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Quality teams to help prepare projects for North American launchLaunch responsibilities will include analytic review of design drawings, test plans, and various quality documents.  Daily communication and regular on-site support with the customer will be required.

Essential Functions:

 

  • Interface between global technical teams and customer.
  • Serve as technical lead for Bendix requirements of design and commercialization processes.
  • Become familiar with product test plans and oversee functional testing and warranty analysis. 
  • Participate in technical discussions with assigned customer. 
  • Become the technical expert on applications at assigned customer.
  • Create part numbers and coordinate component drawings as required for local production.
  • Participate in the development of DFMEAs (including linkage activity of S/C’s and C/C’s – critical characteristics) and other safety-related analyses.
  • Participate in the functional safety requirements definition in accordance with ISO 26262.
  • Interface with advanced plant operations prior to product launch.
  • Interface with plant quality to support the IPA and PPAP processes.
  • Support design improvements to existing products within the Bendix transmission control product lines, including VAVE, improvements to manufacturability and robustness, and development of new customer applications.
  • Perform analysis of End-Of-Line rejects and warranty returns, synthesis and implementation of solutions.
  • Participate in project management tasks - maintain project status and milestones; report out to management; anticipate workload, potential delays, potential problems.
  • This position includes travel to assigned customer facilities.
  • This position may require travel to Knorr-Bremse facilities in North America and other parts of the world.

 

Knowledge:

 

  • Knowledge of ISO/QS9000 Total Quality processes preferred.
  • Knowledge of Bendix / Knorr production processes and design practices is a plus.
  • Ability to support onsite / remote engineering data collection.  Experience with Vector CAN tools is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Commercial Vehicle electronics design (e.g. SAE J1455) and APQP.
  • Knowledgeable in mechanical, environmental, electrical, and vehicle test processes and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of functional safety concepts.

 

Experience:

 

  • 5-7 years of automotive industry or commercial vehicle industry preferred.
  • Customer technical interaction experience (e.g. application engineering).
  • Product development and launch experience preferred, including development of specifications, DFMEAs, and DVP&Rs, basic exposure to and interface with PPAP process; interfacing with manufacturing engineers.
  • Engineering change processes understanding is required; PLM tools and design documentation including creation and/or checking of drawings.  CAD experience is a plus.
  • Validation testing including mechanical, electrical, climatic environments with system and vehicle-level experience.
  • Current product support, including statistical analysis of production data, design of experiments, component failure analysis, and maintenance of specifications, drawings, and BOMs.

 

Skills:

  • Familiar with common engineering tools (SAP, Teamcenter).  CAD is a plus.
  • Effective communicating with customers.
  • Self-starter / self-motivating.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and adapting to changing priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Solid analytical skills.
  • Agile Workforce Team knowledge is a plus. 
  • Good organizational skills, capable of maintaining schedules and communicating progress to management.
  • Outstanding professional presence.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a similar field is required.  
  • Master’s Degree in these fields of Engineering is a plus.

 

Travel requirements:

  • Must be capable of traveling up to 15-20% of the time to various locations nationally and internally
