JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary:

 

Mechanical Tooling Design Engineer needed for a new organization that   produces custom, automated machinery for various locations within Bendix. They must have experience with SolidWorks and be able to design from scratch tooling, fixtures, end of arm tooling for robotics. Someone with Fanuc robot experience a plus.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • The design and development of industrial machines.
  • The ability to spec mechanical components that are both cost effective and appropriate for the application.
  • 3D modeling of parts & assemblies, making drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Communicating with operations and suppliers (to engineer new solutions that offer solid ROI's).
  • Managing multiple projects at one time.
  • Promoting quality, efficiency, and cost savings.
  • Working in an industrial equipment manufacturing environment (sometimes hands on)
  • Quoting/Estimating (limited)
  • Troubleshooting
  • Design simple/straightforward tooling that is as practical and cost-effective as possible while meeting the needs of the process and the cost/timing commitments made to customers.
  • Able to visualize in 3D and communicate using spatial reasoning.
  • Maintain working knowledge of tool design within 3-D Graphics.
  • Plan, conduct research, and implement engineering on complex tooling projects.
  • Create and maintain BOMs, part numbers, prints and other technical documentation necessary to manufacture and operate tooling.
  • Participate in product and tooling design reviews and critique designs from a technical perspective, including Design for Manufacturability. Coordinate with a cross-functional team on tooling projects.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of tooling processes to reduce production downtime, improve efficiency, manufacturing, product design and suppliers/customers. Convey information clearly and effectively through formal and informal documents.
  • Support other Engineers on significant projects.
  • Any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and abide by our organization’s values.

 

Knowledge:

 

  • Able to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Comfortable problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Able to visualize concepts.
  • Self-motivated and multi-task oriented, with a strong work ethic
  • Detail oriented
  • Has a solid track record of reliable attendance.
  • Ideal: basic understanding of statics, dynamics, machine design, motors/gearboxes, and materials.
  • Knowledge of GD&T dimensioning and SPC.
  • Must be able to understand and create mechanical drawings, including tolerances.

 

Experience:

 

  • 3 years’ experience minimum.
  • Experience with developing new tooling designs or major design upgrades for various types of tooling.
  • Experience creating and reviewing bills of materials.

 

Skills:

 

  • Technical writing and typing skills.
  • Mathematical and mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficient 3D CAD experience (SolidWorks)
  • Microsoft office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Education:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering/design, or equivalent.
