JOB DESCRIPTION:
HVAC Electrical Engineer
The HVAC Electrical System Engineer is responsible for the execution of the electrical design and development of Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning systems and controls for passenger rail transit vehicles
The primary objectives of this position are to develop the HVAC electrical design on time, within the approved budget, and specification compliance while achieving a high level of customer satisfaction minimizing or mitigating risks.
The Electrical Engineer is the primary technical contact for the electrical topics with the customer and is responsible for the HVAC system electrical design, including calculations, integration, testing, commissioning, and customer training. The HVAC electrical systems engineer is responsible for the HVAC electrical calculations and selecting the electrical components of the system, in conjunction with the HVAC System Engineer.
Essential Functions
- Review customer specifications.
- Perform system electrical calculations.
- Prepare technical proposals related to the electrical engineering area.
- Develop system electrical specifications and assure compliance.
- Develop system electrical and wiring diagrams and schematics and keep updated.
- Create system bill of materials together with the HVAC System Engineer and HVAC Mechanical Engineer, keep updated, and provide cost estimates per system bill of materials.
- Development of electrical component specifications/requirements
- Create the System Functional Description, in conjunction with the HVAC System Engineer
- Provide customer “feedback” to design engineers and marketing.
- Responsible for the HVAC system type testing at the unit and car level in the climate chamber together with the HVAC System Engineer.
- Identify component-level tasks and responsibilities, and guide/direct/monitor individuals as necessary.
- Support to MNA Customer Training department.
Technical Competencies and Skills
Engineering Principles: Broad experience and good theoretical knowledge of electrical
- Power electrical engineering (AC and DC circuits as per IEEE, AAR, ICEA, IEC, NEC, ANSI, MIL, APTA, ASTM Stds)
- ASHRAE fundamentals and industry requirements
- Electrical components sizing and selection (circuit breakers, contactors, relays, wires, electrical motors, etc.)
- Industrial controls
- Proficient in machine design
- Manufacturing practices
- Value engineering
- Reliability, maintainability, safety, and human factors
- Electrical/electronic controls
Software Experience: Should understand the software development process and capabilities with microprocessor-based systems:
- Define requirements for software SRS through SFD
- Specify hardware performance requirements (HRS)
- Troubleshoot and test microprocessor-based equipment at PIU/PTU level
- Define system diagnostic functions to be performed by the microprocessor
- Business Experience: Must have good business sense.
- Estimating costs
- Make good business decisions

Industry Experience: Knowledge and practical understanding of HVAC or similar equipment and principles
- Experience with ground mobile equipment preferred
- Experience with integrated electromechanical systems
- Hands-on experience with electro-mechanical systems

Process Orientation: Must understand and practice good organization and configuration management skills

Motivation: Must be energetic, hard-working, and willing to put in extra effort when required.
Flexibility: Scheduling of work sometimes requires short notice for extended hours beyond the normal schedule. Must be able to travel on short notice and sometimes for several weeks at a time, especially during the type testing at the car level.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
5+ years of relevant experience
