Test Hardware Engineer Intern – Production Test Systems (Switch Matrix Design)

Position Title: Test Hardware Engineer Intern
Department: Production Test Development

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Test Hardware Engineer Intern to support the design and development of a custom switch matrix used in automated production test systems. This role provides hands-on experience with analog and digital circuit design, relay and switching technologies, PCB development, and test automation hardware. The intern will work closely with various engineering teams to create a reliable, scalable switching architecture capable of routing precision measurement and stimulus signals during manufacturing and validation testing.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop a custom switch matrix subsystem for use in automated production test equipment.
• Evaluate and select switching technologies including electromechanical relays, reed relays, solid-state relays, multiplexers, and analog switches.
• Create schematics and PCB layouts.
• Develop signal routing architectures for voltage, current, resistance, and communication interface testing.
• Perform circuit simulations and analysis to verify signal integrity, switching performance, leakage current, contact resistance, and isolation specifications.
• Assist with prototype assembly, bring-up, troubleshooting, and validation testing.
• Design relay driver circuits, protection circuitry, and interface logic for microcontroller or FPGA-based control systems.
• Conduct bench testing using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, source measure units (SMUs), LCR meters, and other laboratory equipment.
• Document hardware designs, test procedures, design reviews, and validation results.
• Collaborate with manufacturing and test engineering teams to ensure the switch matrix meets production throughput, reliability, and maintainability requirements.
• Support debugging and root-cause analysis of prototype and production hardware issues.

Required Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Completed coursework in circuit analysis, electronics, and digital systems.
• Understanding of analog and digital circuit fundamentals.
• Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB design tools.
• Experience using common laboratory test equipment.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with PCB design and fabrication processes.
• Knowledge of relay switching systems, analog multiplexers, or automated test equipment (ATE).
• Familiarity with signal integrity concepts, low-level measurements, and precision instrumentation.
• Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, I2C, SPI, UART, or GPIO interfaces.

Example Internship Deliverable

By the end of the internship, the selected candidate will have designed, prototyped, and validated a custom switch matrix design capable of automatically routing measurement and stimulus signals between production test instruments and multiple device-under-test (DUT) interfaces.
