JOB DESCRIPTION:
Role Summary:
The KB Signaling business has an intern opening for its Grain Valley and Warrensburg Missouri locations. The Summer Intern will support the Industrial Operations organization by contributing to critical safety, compliance, and project‑management initiatives across the Grain Valley and Warrensburg sites. This role provides hands‑on experience with industrial safety systems, equipment data management, and construction oversight while helping prepare the facility for significant operational upgrades and regulatory milestones. The intern will work closely with the Facilities Manager, contractors, vendors, and cross‑functional teams to ensure that procedures, documentation, and facility conditions meet company expectations as well as OSHA and VPP standards. Through these projects, the intern will gain valuable exposure to real-world applications of safety compliance, facility operations, and project execution.
Examples of Previous Intern Key Responsibilities (subject to change based on business need):
- Verify Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Procedures
- Review current LOTO procedures for accuracy and completeness.
- Conduct field verification to ensure alignment between documented procedures and actual equipment configurations.
- Recommend and implement updates to improve format clarity, consistency, and safety compliance.
- Streamline Site Equipment Directories
- Evaluate the current structure and usability of equipment directories.
- Organize, update, and standardize directory content to ensure accurate and accessible equipment information.
- Identify missing or outdated data and integrate revisions into the master directory.
- Day-to-Day Project Management for the Warrensburg 605 Building Remodel
- Support daily oversight of breakroom and restroom remodeling activities.
- Coordinate communication between contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Track project progress, schedules, and deliverables while ensuring safety and documentation standards are maintained.
- Assist with VPP and OSHA Compliance Activities
- Support site readiness for upcoming VPP certification.
- Participate in facility audits, walkthroughs, and documentation efforts.
- Assist with identifying compliance gaps, implementing corrective actions, and supporting ongoing OSHA/VPP requirements.
- Value Stream Mapping at Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Production Line
- Assist Production team with Value Stream Mapping (VSM) at Fuji machine.
- Identify related areas of waste, machine cycle times, bottlenecks and potential areas of lean improvement ranging from work order release including materials, collective runs (MFU set ups and batching of orders), machine set up, downtimes and changeovers.
- Provide in depth detail of current state vs future state starting from work order release to AOI completion
Qualifications & Requirements
- Pursuing a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering, Industrial Tech or a related field.
- Ability to work independently, identifying improvement opportunities or discrepancies.
- Effective communication skills, with an ability to tailor approach to different groups.
- Strong organizational, time management and data management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize tasks, and follow through on deadlines.
- Comfort working around industrial equipment and learning applicable safety principles.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office / 365 tools (Excel, Word, SharePoint, etc.).
- Interest in project management, construction oversight, or safety compliance is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of OSHA safety concepts is a plus but not required.
- Ability to travel between Grain Valley and Warrensburg sites as needed.
