JOB DESCRIPTION:
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Reliability Maintenance Technician (RMT) is responsible for restoring equipment to its original or improved condition after failure and implementing reliability strategies to reduce future downtime and extend asset life. This role blends hands-on maintenance with technical expertise in data analysis, PM optimization, and predictive maintenance.
Corrective maintenance is performed using a structured approach: diagnosing the issue, identifying and eliminating the root cause, ordering and installing replacement components, validating performance, and returning the equipment to service. All repairs must be permanent and thoroughly documented, including the problem, root cause, solution, and any system changes. This documentation supports ongoing reliability improvements and collaboration across maintenance and engineering teams.
The RMT also performs reliability functions such as condition monitoring, trend analysis, and root cause problem-solving. This includes working closely with Maintenance Engineering (ME) and Industrial Engineering (IE) to analyze recurring issues, recommend design improvements, and refine preventive strategies. A strong working knowledge of PLCs across various platforms is required for both troubleshooting and programming.
This role may require shift work, weekend coverage, or on-call availability in response to urgent breakdowns.
Key Responsibilities:
- Respond promptly to equipment failures; perform diagnosis and permanent corrective repairs using root cause thinking.
- Perform follow-up inspections and verify equipment functionality post-repair to ensure long-term success.
- Conduct condition monitoring activities (e.g., vibration, IR, ultrasound, oil analysis) and record findings in the CMMS for trend analysis.
- Document all corrective actions and diagnostics in detail within the CMMS, including failure symptoms, probable root cause, part replacement, repair steps, and verification of success.
- Support and lead structured problem-solving efforts using 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams, or other RCA tools to drive permanent solutions to chronic failures.
- Collaborate with ME and IE to propose engineering design or process improvements based on documented issues and trends.
- Create and maintain Standard Work Instructions (SWIs), update equipment drawings and technical files when changes are made to restore or improve functionality.
- Evaluate PM task effectiveness and recommend updates or eliminations based on actual failure history and system behavior.
- Recommend changes to spare part inventory based on failure patterns, usage frequency, and part suitability for the application.
- Champion the transition from reactive to proactive maintenance by identifying opportunities for long-term reliability improvements and preventive interventions.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical certification in industrial maintenance or reliability preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in corrective and/or predictive maintenance in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
- Skilled in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
- Strong understanding of PLCs across various platforms, including both troubleshooting and programming capabilities.
- Familiar with condition monitoring tools and techniques (e.g., ultrasound, vibration, thermal imaging).
- Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, equipment manuals, and P&IDs.
- Experience with CMMS software (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo).
- Strong technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
- Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
