JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary:

Leads team to ensure the objectives of the work unit are met and work processes are continuously improved. Assigns the work according to the priority coming from the internal and external customers, reviews progress and evaluates results. Provides strategic input and may make hiring / disciplinary decisions. This position will perform a full range of technical work on the Wheel End Laboratory including FMEA’s, DVP’s, writing new test procedures, sign-off test reports, draft laboratory management policies & procedures, test report templates, measurement uncertainty budgets and inter-laboratory correlation studies.  This position also runs laboratory empirical investigations resolving component level root-cause analysis. This role provides developmental opportunity for those aspiring to move into Engineering Manager.

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Supervise daily test activity and performance of  direct reports,  engineer and technicians including coaching, identifying business goals, growing individual skills, completing performance reviews, hiring/disciplinary decisions.
  • Leads test planning activities with product engineering for disc brake, drum brakes, slack adjuster and actuator product lines
  • Manage test resources and equipment calibration, efficiency and utilization.
  • Develop metrics to drive improved productivity and quality
  • Provide technical direction and support to technicians performing tests.
  • Promote and support a team focus toward meeting the needs of internal and external customers.
  • Plans, conducts, and coordinates a broad range of complex engineering technical assignments requiring an in-depth knowledge of foundation brake hardware and laboratory testing techniques.
  • Responsible for DVP&R execution in accordance with laboratory policy and program timing providing point of contact for laboratory test request status.
  • Responsible for approval of all test reports described on a DVP&R, accountable for evaluation of technical information provided in a test report and checking the interpretation of test results.
  • Analyze test data and write test reports to clearly document test results and conclusions. 
  • Regarded as a foundation brake hardware technical expert in the area of laboratory test methods.
  • Will be a support resource to other Bendix departments requiring test support.
  • Responsible to introduce new tools related to testing and data processing.
  • Responsible for 5s + 1 audits, SCARs & PARs.
  • Interface with and give presentations to internal and external customers.

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills in a team environment.  E.g. DFSS, 8D RCA
  • DFMEA and DVP&R processes
  • MS Project and Gantt Chart resource leveling
  • Able to write test procedures, test templates and test plans
  • Able to support standard development with legal institutes. E.g. SAE, ISO
  • Knowledge of ISO17025
  • Knowledge of air brake system. E.g. Air Disc Brakes, S-cam Brakes, Drum Brakes, Actuator, Air Chambers, Slack Adjusters.
  • Experience running brake tests on inertia dynamometer
  • Experience with calibration of laboratory equipment
  • Statistical capability
  • Skilled in DOE (Design of Experiments) techniques
  • Reliability Methods
  • Process Improvements
  • Knowledge, application, identification of C/C (Critical Characteristics), S/C (Special Characteristics), P/C (Pass Thru Characteristics)
  • Metrology, data acquisition & control, test equipment & instrumentation, test standards & procedures as applied wheel end brake products.
  • Document control with Teamcenter Unified Architecture or similar system for engineering drawings, specifications, test procedures, test reports.

  • Effective at communicating complex testing principles with a variety of audience including customers and suppliers
  • Detail oriented and driven to complete Test Requests on time as per priority provided by internal and external customers
  • Manual resource leveling of Master Gantt charts
  • Strong Root Cause Analysis (RCA) skills

Experience:

  • 8 years minimum experience with foundation brake hardware testing and leadership with progressively responsible position within the automotive industry or commercial vehicle industry is required.
  • Knowledge of ISO17025 is strongly preferred.
  • Capability to lead technical activities and guide by the example will be highly regarded.
  • Experience on laboratory process improvements is strongly preferred.
  • 8D process experience and demonstrated implementation of PCA solutions will be highly regarded.
  • Six Sigma experience is strongly preferred.
  • Project coordination experience is strongly preferred.

Education

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is required
  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is preferred

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Bowling Green is $89,900 to $158,200 per year. The final pay offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, the type of years and experience within the industry and education. Bendix is a multi-state employer, and this pay scale may not reflect positions that work in other states or locations. Provided they meet all eligibility requirements under the applicable plan documents, employees (and their eligible dependents) will be eligible to enroll in group healthcare plans that offer medical, dental, vision, and basic life and disability insurance. Employees also will be able to enroll in our company’s 401k plan. Employees will also receive 120 hours of vacation leave and 40 hours of Personal Paid Absence every year. Employees will also enjoy 12 paid holidays, and 1 floating holiday throughout the calendar year, subject to relevant terms outlined in the employee handbook. 6 weeks of paid parental leave will also be available for use.
